Some Fascinating Facts about why Breastmilk is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!

  1. In the United States ~84% of moms start out breastfeeding their babies. By 6 months ~26% of moms are exclusively breastfeeding and ~58% of babies are getting a combination of breastmilk and formula. (CDC,2020 Report card)   If you need some motivation to keep breastfeeding and/or pumping, then keep reading!
  2. Did you know when you get sick your breastmilk changes to protect your baby by increasing the number of white blood cells to fight off infection. Often you can see that it changes in color to look more like the creamy yellowish colostrum color from the early days of nursing.
  3. Did you know that breastmilk is SWEET but the smell and taste changes depending on what you eat. Babies who are exposed to all kinds of food through breastmilk are often less picky eaters later in toddlerhood.
  4. Breastfeeding burns a bunch of calories…400-600 calories per day! That explains why you are always hungry!
  5. Providing your baby with breastmilk saves ~$1500-$2000 per year! $$$$$
  6. Did you know that your breasts have the ability to heat up and cool down according to your baby’s temperature when she/he is in skin to skin with you? WOW!
  7. 75% of moms produce more milk in the right breast. Lefty is often the slacker boob!
  8. Did you know that breastmilk naturally has melatonin that fluctuates during the day and night? Melatonin helps babies sleep better! zzzzzzz
  9. There are over 200 oligosaccharides, which are prebiotics, naturally in breastmilk. They play a big role to support a healthy gut so babies have less constipation and less gut issues.
  10. Your milk is the PERFECT food for your baby to help with optimal growth and brain development. Depending on the age of your baby, your milk nutritional composition changes for your baby. Breastmilk naturally has the exact type and amount of protein, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, oligosaccharides, prebiotics, antibodies, stem cells, enzymes, and hormones to meet the demand for every age of your baby.
